Gunsmith FAQs

How to Initiate Gunsmith Work

Pretty simple—get it to us and let us know what you need. You can do this either:
In Person: Drop it off anytime the counter is open to the public. See hours here. Appointments are no longer needed.
Mail In: See full instructions here. Don't forget to include a copy of your drivers license or state ID.

Function Work "Tech Tips"

• Bring a magazine too if you need any kind of function work (trigger kit, repair, etc.) or work that requires disassembly (full cleaning, Cerakote, etc.) We will need to perform a full function test after completion, and this is best done with your own magazine(s).
• If you are having function trouble, it is helpful to bring the ammunition you use and/or spent casings. This can help the gunsmiths diagnose problems more quickly, and to insure the firearm will perform properly under the same conditions you will experience.

Can I talk to a Gunsmith?

Yep, sure can. All our work is done in-house, and one reason we limit our public hours is to insure a gunsmith is available for walk-in/phone consultation when the counter is open. Caveat: life happens, and occasionally a gunsmith is not available for some reason or another. If you are coming a long way, it is best to call ahead and confirm if it is important to you to discuss things directly with a gunsmith.

Can you do my work while I wait?

Mmm, sometimes. There are certain services we can perform same-day by pre-arrangement only: sight changes, mount & bore sight scope; some parts installations. Please contact us if have a need for same day service and we'll make a plan. Additional charges may be incurred for same day service.

Do you do machining?

Sorry, we are not doing any machining at this time and do not have any immediate plans to add machining services.

Do you work on all guns?

We work on most, but not all. We hate to be negative, but it's quicker to list what we don't work on, including:
• AK platform firearms
• Antique flintlock firearms (refinishing ok; no function work)
• Air guns/BB guns
• "Bargain Gun" function work—If the typical price for a type of gun is $500, and you bought one for $250, there is a reason it was priced so low. Usually the materials are softer; the tolerances are sloppy and/or the design is poor. This is not something we can fix. Even major manufacturers have some of these in their entry level lines, and many low priced imports fall into this category. Some examples: Sig Sauer Mosquito, S&W SD9, most Hi-Point firearms, pretty much anything imported by ATI. If you have one of these, your best bet is to contact the manufacturer. Many will make it right, and they are generally the only ones who have the parts needed to correct the problem. Feel free to contact us ahead of time if you think your work may fall into this category.

Laws We Must Observe

• Illinois residents must present FOID on drop off & pick up by state law.
• Same person must pick up the gun who dropped it off by federal law. If it must be returned to a different person for any reason, they must complete a 4473 and background check, and observe the waiting period.
• Out of town customers: We must return the firearm to the same person/place we received it from by federal law.

Folks, we don't make the rules; we just have to follow them like everyone else. Please don't be upset if we will not make exceptions.
